CHOICE Review
With the sixth edition (1994) of this work, the Council of Biology Editors began an attempt to generate a general scientific style for publications. In 2000 the group was renamed the Council of Science Editors and it extended membership to all scientific disciplines. This new edition is another step down that road. While continuing to address the quest for a general style, the guide also acknowledges discipline-specific practices. Furthermore, the work now addresses the policies and practices of science publishing, including ethical issues and copyright matters. Chapters on scientific conventions are organized roughly from smallest to largest, beginning with the electromagnetic spectrum and ending with animals. The chapter on genes, chromosomes, and related molecules, in particular, will guide users through nomenclature practices generated by the blooming of this research area since the previous edition. The sources of standards for nomenclature and style from various scientific bodies are well documented, and there are plenty of see references pointing readers to related discussions in other parts of the work. The new edition's larger format, brighter paper, and clear typeface make usage easier than in the previous edition. Summing Up: Essential. All libraries supporting scholarship in the sciences; lower-division undergraduates and above. Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by S. K. Oelker.
