CHOICE Review
Like waves rolling in from the ocean, this collection brings fresh ideas to shore. Editor Bauman (Gallaudet Univ.) assembles 19 scholars in deaf studies who contribute chapters organized in sections titled "Framing Deaf Studies," "Deaf Perception and Community," "Language and Literacy," "Places and Borders," "Intersections and Identities," and "The Question of Disability." The book asks a lot of its readers: take off one's phonocentric view, recognize a phonocentric blind spot, and remove one's auditory view of culture, literacy, and language embedded in sound in order to examine culture through a visual "deaf theoretical lens." But readers will reap rewards that are not limited to deaf culture and that shed light on understanding of the human race in general. The authors utilize new words and concepts: "dysconscious audism," "phonocentric blind spots," a "convert culture," "Deaf HERstory," "inclusive bilingualism"--all of which provide unique ways of thinking and writing about deaf culture. This volume would serve as a companion to Bauman's book and DVD Signing the Body Poetic: Essays on American Sign Language Literature (CH, Jul'07, 44-6078), Paddy Ladd's Understanding Deaf Culture (2002), and Carol Padden and Tom Humphries's Inside Deaf Culture (CH, Oct'05, 43-1268). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by J. F. Andrews.
