Summary
The Face of Discrimination documents the extent, character, and implications of race and sex discrimination at work and in housing, drawing from a rich body archived discrimination suits themselves. It moves beyond traditional social science research on the topic and grounds the reader in the reality of discrimination as it is played out in the actual jobs, neighborhoods, and lives of real people. CHOICE Review
Gender and racial discrimination are social problems that many erroneously assume have essentially disappeared. In reality, they have only become less obvious: they are still present and still produce negative consequences for their victims. Roscigno (Ohio State Univ.) selects a sample from an extensive longitudinal population of discrimination cases in Ohio. Through his data, the author is able to describe gender and race discrimination experiences and issues in employment and housing (in Ohio), the contextual intersection of these issues, and the human re-creation of social stratification. Roscigno explores the theoretical explanations for these experiences and broadens the theoretical thought to address how human actions maintain, as well as challenge, stratification; how organizational structure and culpability factors into stratification; and how inequality is embedded in the social context. The book is written academically but is generally accessible to others; the message is important and well articulated. For anyone interested in race and/or gender studies, employment issues, and housing issues. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by L. Wolfer. From: Syndetics Solutions, Inc. Distributed by Syndetic Solutions, Inc.
