World geography [videorecording]
Discovery Channel (Firm)
School Library Journal Review
Gr 6-12 This series' 124 segments take students to the continents and nations of the world. Each title opens with a general overview of a continent and its main regions, followed by two-to-eight minute segments that visit its nations and cities. topics reflect the thematic strands of geography: culture, people, environment, government, economics, history, and science. Specific topics vary widely and include the gorillas of Uganda, Carnival in Brazil, emerald mining in Colombia, the ancient Roman aqueducts in Italy, French culture in Quebec, coffee production in Guatemala, and the caste system in India. Although topics such as the civil war in Rwanda and African poverty are mentioned, there is no discussion or footage of controversial subjects such as the AIDS crisis in Africa. Each segment begins with a map that highlights the country or region and identifies its neighbors and important features such as capital cities and landforms. Geographical terms are defined and featured in onscreen graphics. Technical quality is very good. Visuals include live-action footage of places and people, reenactments of historic events, period stills, and newsreel footage. Both men and women provide the narration. Although many of these segments are superficial, they do allow students to "see" something about all of these places. The series can be used to introduce or enrich a world geography unit, and is a good additional choice for middle and secondary libraries. Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
