Library Journal Review
Champagne, the director of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center, has put together a handy reference covering notable people, places, and events in Native history. Beginning with a tribal chronology and historical timeline, the work moves from 50,000 B.C. to the present.Copyright 1994 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From: Reed Elsevier Inc. CHOICE Review
Champagne (UCLA) is the editor of the recent Native North American Almanac (CH, May'94) and its unabridged version, Native America: Portrait of the Peoples (1994). Here, he has attempted to produce "the most comprehensive and sympathetic chronology about Native issues and events available today" with an emphasis on recent historical events. All subject areas are covered in this ten-chapter overview, which is divided into three historical periods: pre-1500; 1500-1959; and 1960-March 1994. Champagne includes a historical introduction, a section of brief chronologies of selected tribes, and a timeline that places major Native American political and social events in the context of world history. At the end of the volume are excerpts from speeches of well-known Native American "orators" (curiously, speeches of contemporary leaders are excluded) and important documents in Native American history, descriptions of legal cases, and an annotated bibliography. There are numerous black-and-white photographs, maps, and line drawings and a detailed name/subject index. This work fills a gap in one-volume chronologies of Native American history, especially since Barbara Leitch LePoer's Chronology of the American Indian (1975). From: Syndetics Solutions, Inc.
