CHOICE Review
As part of the "Global Issues" series, this introductory work on religious fundamentalism follows a standard format of three sections. The first defines this worldwide phenomenon using criteria formulated by the University of Chicago's Fundamentalism Project. Frey (independent scholar) then gives a whirlwind tour of American religious history with an emphasis on the roots and emergence of Protestant fundamentalism, along with case studies of fundamentalist groups in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and India. The second section consists of primary source documents. The final section is devoted to research tools for the student, including an annotated bibliography and brief sketches of key players, research organizations, and fundamentalist groups. This volume would have benefited from a fuller discussion of what does and does not constitute fundamentalism. In practice, the author defines it more broadly than would other scholars. For example, he considers ultratraditionalist groups such as the Amish to be fundamentalists, as well as apocalyptic white power groups in the Christian Identity movement. For a fuller and more nuanced discussion, students should consult Strong Religion: The Rise of Fundamentalisms around the World, by G. A. Almond, R. S. Appleby, and E. Sivan (CH, Oct'03, 41-1173). Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates. Reviewed by W. Fontaine. From: Syndetics Solutions, Inc.
